Leucippus, an ancient Greek philosopher from Abdera, is often credited as one of the founders of atomism. He proposed that all matter is composed of indivisible units called atoms, which move through the void. Although little of his work survives, he is recognized for challenging the philosophical views of the Eleatics, particularly regarding the nature of change and the existence of a void. Democritus, also from Abdera and a student of Leucippus, expanded upon his mentor's ideas, formulating a comprehensive theory of atomism. He believed that atoms are the fundamental building blocks of the universe and that all sensory experiences are merely the result of the arrangement and movement of these atoms. Democritus also contributed to ethics, emphasizing the pursuit of happiness and the importance of wisdom in leading a fulfilling life.
