Fish Traps or Yairs were built up to 3000 years ago as this section of coastline has many red sandstone terraces, basalt dykes and glacial granite boulders. The cliffs behind the old raised beach are home to eight Bronze or Iron Age forts and eight castles which may have built and/or used the yairs. Around six different types of yairs may be found, often utilising natural features. Many have been disrupted over the millennia by storm action and others by robbing for road building, sea defences, drystone dykes, etc.
