Argus Panoptes is a figure in Greek mythology who is best known for his famous epithet, "all-seeing". He was a giant with a hundred eyes, fifty of which were always open and alert at any given time, while the other fifty slept. This made him an incredibly powerful and effective guard, and he was often employed to watch over valuable objects or people.
According to legend, Argus was originally a mortal man who had been transformed into a giant with a hundred eyes by the goddess Hera. He was tasked with the job of guarding Io, a beautiful nymph who had been turned into a cow by Zeus to protect her from Hera's wrath. Argus was able to keep a close eye on Io at all times, preventing her from escaping his watchful gaze.
Argus is often depicted in art as a fiercely formidable figure, with his many eyes staring out at the viewer in a menacing and unsettling way. He is also sometimes shown holding a staff or a spear, emphasizing his role as a guard and protector. Despite his fearsome reputation, however, Argus met his demise when he was slain by Hermes, who was sent by Zeus to rescue Io.
In addition to his role as a guard, Argus has been associated with other elements of Greek mythology. For example, he is sometimes identified as the son of Arestor, a minor figure in Greek myth, and he is also sometimes linked to the invention of the flute. Overall, however, Argus is best known for his status as a powerful and imposing figure who served as a watchful protector in ancient Greek mythology.
