Hello and welcome to SHOP MAD,
In this video I'll show you how to make a simple self centering marking jig. Easy DIY project.
You can make it as big as you want but in this video I made the marking jig 100 mm long.
Materials used to make the self centering marking jig.
2 x 8mm x 40mm dowels
Wood 100mm x 25mm square
and A pencil
Firstly markout your peice of wood to 100mm long and cut it, then measure in 15mm either end and mark a line. Using a marking gauge scribe a line through the center of the wood and high light with a pencil.
You should now have three centers marked on the wood. Drill out the two end holes to a depth of 15mm using a 8mm drill bit, Then drill out the center hole using a 7.5mm drill bit this size depends on the size of pencil you are going to use. Using wood glue apply to the two outside holes and install the two 8mm x 40mm dowels, wipe of any glue with a damp rag. Install the pencil into the center hole to the required depth.
The self centering marking jig is now ready to use.
Place the jig over the work peice you want a center line on and twist the marking jig until the two dowels touch and then draw the jig towards yourself and you should now have a center line marked on your work piece.
