Lili Reinhart took to Twitter recently to clap back at Riverdale fans for bullying her co-star, Shannon Purser.
That’s right, y’all! Lili Reinhart wants Bughead fans to know that bullying just ain’t it.
If you caught the most recent episode of Riverdale, you were probably shook AF when Shannon Purser’s character, Ethel Muggs, shared a kiss with Jughead Jones, who’s played by Cole Sprouse. That being said, we think we can all agree that being shook by a scene from a show is totally fine, but when fans start harassing the actors for doing their jobs, things have officially gone too far.
Well, that’s pretty much exactly what happened to Shannon Purser. After the kissing scene aired, Bughead fans came for blood, bullying the actress for coming between Jughead’s relationship with Betty, played by his real-life girlfriend Lili Reinhart.
Shannon responded to the haters in a series of since-deleted tweets, one that included a SpongeBob meme and the caption, QUOTE, “All the stans who finally feel comfortable calling me fat/ugly now that Ethel has interfered with their ship.” She also added, QUOTE, “I’m not stressed about it, trust me. I just wonder what these people will think in like 10 yrs when they remember their twitter and realize they insulted and attacked real human beings for their character on a tv show…”
Not gonna lie, that fact that fans are harassing Shannon is totally ridiculous. We mean, she was just doing her job and acting out a scene that was written for her for a fictional TV show! Bullying her for it is not only uncalled for, but it’s straight up mean.
Luckily, the 21-year-old actress has some very supportive co-stars who came to her defense on Twitter, slamming diehard Bughead fans for bullying her over something that was completely out of her control. After one account posted a tweet reminding Riverdale fans that bullying the cast is never okay, Lili chimed in to defend her friend.
She wrote, QUOTE “Shannon is my friend, and it is embarrassing that people felt the need to attack her personally for something that happened on a SHOW. Written by WRITERS. You are not a fan of mine if you treat my friend like this.”
This tweet echoes what Lili said in an interview with Teen Vogue last year.
She told the mag, QUOTE, “People are kind of blurring the lines between real people and the characters that we play, and it’s important to remember that this is a show, and that these are parts that we play, and these are sets that we’re on.”
Clearly, some Bughead fans are letting the show influence how they feel about the actors IRL, and that’s just not cool. But what do you guys think about Lili coming to Shannon’s defense?
