Since my last post about the difference between a 12-megapixel sensor and a 60-megapixel sensor seemed to generate a lot of controversy, here's another one comparing the two.
In the first test, I compared a photo shot on my 60-megapixel Sony A7RIV with an image shot on my 12-megapixel Sony ZV-E1. This drew the concern that different sensors can show different amounts of noise and sharpness. In this test, I used all images from my Sony A7RIV and downsized to 12 megapixels.
To be honest, the difference isn't much! I find that megapixels make a much larger difference when your subject is far away or when shooting with a telephoto lens. Notice how much sharper the last photo (shot at 600mm) appears on the 60-megapixel sensor, while the 12-megapixel shot lacks sharpness.
Still, the 60-megapixel sensor is amazing for prints. On a digital screen, the difference is very little. But when printing large, you'll notice a much bigger difference if you have more megapixels. That said, more megapixels are probably not a good reason to upgrade your camera. Canon shooters, rejoice! 😉😂
