In 1889, Sundar Singh was born into the luxury of his family's wealth. By the age of seven, he had already memorized the Bagawadgita, a long and intricate verse containing lessons of life. By age sixteen, Sundar had mastered many of the ancient books on Hinduism and had also studied the Koran.
Sundar would later state that while growing up, he felt his religious pursuits in Sikhism and answers from various Hindu priests had left him feeling a lack of purpose and meaning in his life.
Reaching a point of desperation, Sundar planned to throw himself in front of a train unless God revealed himself. After a number of hours, his room began to glow and a vision appeared before him. Amazed that his vision had taken the form of Jesus, Sundar was convinced that He was the one, "True" Savior, and that Jesus was alive. Sundar fell to his knees before Him and experienced an astonishing peacefulness which he had never felt before. The vision disappeared, but the incredible peace and joy would stay with him throughout his life.
Against the wishes of his family, Sundar converted to Christianity and was publicly baptized on his sixteenth birthday. He was subsequently renounced by his family for his conversion.
In 1906, Sundar began his Christian missionary journey wearing the turban and yellow robe of a Hindu sadhu. Sundar viewed himself as a sadhu, although one that taught Christianity rather than Hinduism and he believed Christianity would not be accepted in India unless it was introduced in an Indian way.
During his twenties, his ministry expanded, and before he was thirty, his name and picture were familiar all over the Christian world. He traveled to India and Tibet, as well as the rest of the world, with the message that the modern interpretation of Jesus had sadly, been watered down.
In 1929, against all of his friends' advice, Sadhu Singh made one last journey to Tibet and was last seen on the 18th of April 1929.
