We aren't picky but.... Japanese techniques and extremely traditional Japanese food is an incredibly unique cuisine with a lot of foundations in Buddhist teachings for food and nourishment. It focuses on minimal seasonings, local herbs, pickles, and is often vegetarian. This means plain or herbal flavours and extremely light. Paired with French cuisine (sans the butter, mind you!), this becomes an eclectic mix of techniques and local ingredients in pairings and combinations you won't see anywhere else.
Jos can't hide her first reactions. Sometimes it's the taste. Sometimes it's the texture. We've eaten all sorts of fermented food, strange pairings, unusual ingredients, and unusual proteins, and despite being able to appreciate the food, regardless of how good the quality of the food is, subjectively it's really not for everyone.
That's not to say you shouldn't stay here, because Kirara was an incredible stay! Breakfast was much simpler, and easier to digest. So there's that.
