2. SOUNDBITE (English): Ben Hatfield, Chief executive officer for International Coal Group Inc:
"We have now confirmed permanent ventilation seals that had been constructed across the main entries, just in by the entrance to the second left section have been breached by a substantial explosive force that apparently originated from within the sealed area. Mine rescue crews have also located the body of a miner near the belt drive at the entrance to the second left section, which is roughly 11,250 feet from the mine portal. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to identify and confirm the deceased miner's identity. Plans are to bring out the body as soon as possible and identification may proceed removal of the body."

4. SOUNDBITE (English): Ben Hatfield, Chief executive officer for International Coal Group Inc:
"It's a nightmare, it's the worst news that we can possibly deliver to families that are anxiously awaiting good news. So we are devastated by it, families are devastated, there is a lot of anxiety because we haven't yet identified the employee so our heart and prayers at this point are with the families."

"It's very sad and very sombre... they just announced that they did find one body, and we just don't know who it is, and that is the part everybody wonders and thinks the worst, 'well probably it is my family and my husband, my son'."

"They don't know who it is"
(Question: "It is just one body they found?")
"Yeah.. one body they found..."
(Indistinct question)
"Not near where the explosion was.."
Question: "And the car, what happened?")
"It was empty, the other 12 wasn't in it.."
(Question: "And they thought it was perhaps a positive sign?")
"Yeah. They wasn't around there nowhere, so they may be in a... hold now."

13. SOUNDBITE (English): Joe Manchin, West Virginia Governor:
"Things are doing well and we are very pleased with the conditions that we have found, but we still understand that we have an uphill fight, the odds are against us but we are still working very hard. The men are working hard, we know that 12 people survived the blast, we know that 12 people are together and they walked off together, and we are hoping to find the 12 safe and sound but we have long odds, we know that. But we still believe in miracles and we hope your prayers are with us and praying for that miracle that we need in West Virginia."

STORYLINE:
Twelve miners caught in an explosion in a West Virginia coal mine were found alive more than 41 hours after the blast.
A relative at the Sago Baptist Church near the mine, said a foreman called relatives there, saying the miners had been found.
Neither the company nor the governor's office immediately confirmed that the men were alive.
Rescue crews had found one body in the mine but held out hope that the others were still alive.
The unidentified body was found about 700 feet (210 metres) from a mine car, about 11,250 feet (3,430 metres) from the mine's opening.
Hatfield said it appeared that the other miners were able to get out of the mine car "under their own power."
