The Chinese government is going on a charm offensive over what is happening in Xinjiang. The governor of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has spoken for the first time and in detail about its network of camps for Muslim minorities.
Shohrat Zakir describes the facilities as “professional vocational training institutions” that focus on “the country’s common language, legal knowledge, vocational skills, along with de-extremisation education”.
The governor said the camps are part of the Chinese government’s way of fighting extremism to protect the country. But critics accuse China of forcibly keeping more than a million Uygurs in what they call detention centers where they are subjected to brainwashing.
