Practical video taken from @alastairneil291 on TikTok and regraded to more closely match the movie.
And wouldn't you know it after grading the difference in visual quality is not that apparent i.e. the CGI doesn't look bad like some people are claiming and the practical suit doesn't look "leagues better" either.
What is different however is the facial animation, the mandibles on the practical suit move but are stiff and robotic. The eyebrows don't emote, the skin between the mandibles doesn't flap.
All that is present on the CGI version - and that's exactly why it ended up in the movie.
They used practical suit whenever they could but some scenes just had to be done using CGI because of the complexity of either facial animation or physical movement as well as other reasons. To say it blunt - CGI was used whenever the practical effects weren't up to the task/looked worse.
This is exactly the same approach that worked so well for the original Jurassic Park which is still praised for today.
