Foot rot is very common around here because the land is so wet. Untreated it is a miserable condition and can quickly affect the health and happiness of the whole sheep. Apparently the bacteria only survives a few weeks on its own, but it’s hard to get rid of it when your sheep have to come into the same place every day to get milked. For us it’s not too big a problem, because we see the sheep everyday and it never develops too far, but when we see them limping we usually find it. Anyway, this is what we do – trim and clean the hoof, and then use a copper sulphate solution as a treatment. The welly just makes it easier to keep the foot in the solution without spilling lots of it.
50g of copper sulphate powder mixed into half a litre warm water.
(Copper sulphate powder is usually sold for making a spray against blight in potatoes. Don’t drink it – it’s poisonous.)
We can’t exactly recommend you do this – we aren’t vets – but it works for us. (Well, not us exactly – our sheep, obviously. So far we don’t seem to have foot rot...)
