STORYLINE:
Senegal’s Court of Appeals has released official provisional results in Sunday’s presidential election, confirming a win in the first round for Bassirou Diomaye Faye, with 54.28% of votes.
Amady Diouf, president of Dakar’s Court of Appeals read the results at a press conference, correcting himself after mistakenly listing Faye’s percentage as 50.28%: “For Bassirou Diomaye Faye, I will specify that he has 54.28% [of votes]. 54.28%. 54.28%.
In Senegal, a candidate must obtain at least 50% of votes in order to win without a run-off round of voting. The second frontrunner, Amadou Ba, obtained only 35.79% of votes. Ba was backed by outgoing President Macky Sall.
Diouf added: "Every voter was able to express themselves through their vote. So we want to thank [the magistrates] for this work and this sense of personal sacrifice, which shows us that they have guaranteed sincere results, and a sincere and transparent election.”
Senegal is lauded as an example of democracy in West Africa, which was thrown into question last month when Sall attempted to delay the elections that were scheduled on February 25. His bid to delay was rejected by the Constitutional Court, and elections were rescheduled for March 24.
Though the court did not release results until today, Amadou Ba called Faye to concede Monday after polling station results across the country showed a clear win for Faye. Sall’s mandate ends on April 2nd.
