Israel Adesanya crossed paths with Alex Pereira many years ago in kickboxing, Pereira won both fights, first by decision and the latter by KO, both fighters went on with their careers and excelled at the top level competition, in the case of Adesanya it was Kickboxing before he made the transition to MMA, while Pereira established himself as one of the best kickboxers in the middleweight and lightheavyweight divison as he became world champion in both those weightclasses simultaneously, Israel Adesanya became the next superstar of the UFC middlewight division and had an impressive record against the top guys of the organization to eventually become the undisputed world champion, yet his image was still somewhat blackened due to people constantly mentioning the worst moment of his career, when he was laying unconcious in the canvas while Pereira stood on the other corner of the octagon celebrating, this seemed to haunt izzy thoughout his career and even outside of it, as he kept diminishing it in interviews while making direct insults towards his former opponent, making clear that it was merely a fluke that happened a long time ago, and if they were to meet again it would play out entirely different, Pereira then made his transition to MMA as a response to Izzy, he had a meteoric rise in the sport, both those fighters performed at UFC 276 headlined by Adesanya who defended his title against Jared Cannonier, Pereira fought Sean Strickland who was the no4. contender at the time, Pereira won by KO in the first round, that was his last fight before getting a title shot, Adesanya called him out the same night in front of the whole world, and the rest was history.
