THIS IS HOW PRINCESS LEONOR SPENT HER 19TH BIRTHDAY
Her sister, Infanta Sofia,
traveled secretly to Galicia
and arrived in Marín at dusk to accompany
her in the final hours of her special day.
It was Princess Leonor's 19th birthday, but there was no celebration.
October 31st fell on a Thursday,
she was not going to skip school and it was not a round number either...
And most importantly: no one in the Royal Family was in the mood for a party.
Like the whole kingdom, the Zarzuela Palace was in mourning for the DANA tragedy.
Her 18th birthday was a day of celebration and history.
She swore the oath of allegiance to the constitution,
was awarded the Collar of the Royal and
Distinguished Spanish Order of Charles III,
the highest and most distinguished civil decoration granted by the State,
held a party at the El Pardo palace with her family and friends;
and thousands of people took to the streets to greet her
and sing 'happy birthday' as she drove to the Cortes in a Rolls-Royce.
But this year everything was different.
On Thursday it was already known that many people had died,
that there were dozens missing,
that the material damage was incalculable and that the tragedy would
worsen in the 78 affected municipalities,
75 of them in Valencia and the Princess of Asturias,
also greatly affected by the impact of the floods,
suspended her plans and reduced the celebration of her anniversary to a minimum.
