Physical Therapist Lisa Lombardo discusses her work at the Advanced Platform Technology Center of the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center on developing an app controlled modified rowing machine that works with electrical stimulation of the user's paralyzed nerves and muscles allowing them to exercise both their arms and legs at the same time. Lombardo, who has been working with paralyzed individuals for more than 20 years, says the ability to exercise is key to avoiding many secondary health complications including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and depression.
The Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center is a Department of Veterans Affairs Research Center in the Rehabilitation Research and Development Service. The Center addresses the pressing clinical needs of disabled Veterans by harnessing the most recent developments in untapped engineering and basic science disciplines, and applying them to design and disseminate new rehabilitation interventions.
