Squadron Leader Ted Coningsby is called upon to take part in a historic flight at his home base at RAF Coningsby on BBMF Members Day. Ted was on board the Avro Lancaster PA474 and not only took part in the formation display with two Spitfires, had his wingman Flt Lt Matt Brighty follow him in a Eurofighter Typhoon for a historic Lancaster/Typhoon formation display.

It is also historic as this is Flt Lt Matt Brighty's last display and the final displays for the season of the BBMF too. What a way to end a display season having our very own Sqn Ldr take part in it.

This was such a special day and you can not only spot ted in the front gun turret of the Lancaster but you can catch him in the rear of the cockpit too as the Lancaster begins to taxi for departure.

You'll also catch a fun bit of commentary as Sqn Ldr Mark Long mentions our very own Nikos too! What a day...what flight...what a season!

The Avro Lancaster is the most famous and successful RAF heavy bomber of World War Two. There are only two airworthy Lancasters left in the world - 7,377 were built. Lancaster PA474 was built at the Vickers Armstrong Broughton factory at Hawarden Airfield, Chester on 31 May 1945, just after VE day. The war in the Far East ended before she was deployed and she did not take part in any hostilities.

In formation with the Lancaster, the Typhoon is going at similar speeds to when it is initiating AAR (Air to Air Refuelling) which is about 140 mph and it is at a comfortable speed. It looks so impressive and we look forward to 2024 season to see what is in store for the next displays!
