Nilda Rendino was a successful businesswoman who enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. But 25 years ago, she started to blink uncontrollably, to the point where she could not see anything. She was diagnosed with blepharospasm, a rare neurological disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions around the eyes. She tried various treatments, but nothing worked. She became functionally blind and isolated from the world.
But then, she found hope at Emory Brain Health Center, where she received botulinum toxin injections around and in her eyes. The injections relaxed the muscles and reduced the spasms, allowing her to see again for the first time in decades. She was amazed by the changes in her surroundings and grateful for the chance to reconnect with her loved ones. She also joined a support group for people with blepharospasm and became an advocate for raising awareness and finding a cure.
This video clip tells the story of Nilda’s journey from darkness to light, and how Emory’s experts helped her regain her fantastic mind.
