IS THERE A CONFLICT BETWEEN STAYING TRUE TO YOURSELF AND EVOLVING? Questlove and Common examine the interplay between craft and authenticity. They discuss the tension between staying true to who you are and evolving to accomplish more, referencing how they’ve both expanded their creativity beyond music. The episode includes an interview with writer and motivational speaker, Simon Sinek, who talks about the connection between inner purpose and authenticity. Also featured is an exploration of how The Balvenie upholds their authenticity by practicing the five crafts of whisky-making on-site: barley farming, barrel-making, barley-malting, copper smithing and malt mastering.
“I'm fortunate enough to return for Season Four of Quest for Craft, partnering once again with The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky,” shared Questlove. “Much like The Balvenie and its craftspeople who have devoted years to mastering their craft, my own life is a constantly unfolding creative journey. As I’ve expanded my own crafts from music to writing and filmmaking, it is illuminating to engage in these conversational investigations with individuals who exemplify wholehearted dedication to their crafts. It feels akin to how the people at The Balvenie are passing the art of craftsmanship through generations – I’m a student of creativity and many of our viewers are as well.”
“The Balvenie has a rich family legacy that set the highest standard of whisky-making craftsmanship more than 130 years ago,” shares Greg Levine, Vice President, Marketing, Single Malt Scotch Whiskies USA. “We’re one of the few major distilleries to farm and malt our own barley, and maintain our own in-house cooperage. As proponents of ultimate craftsmanship, we're excited to continue exploring the human elements driving craft across disciplines, and we're proud to bring these stories into the world with Questlove as our partner.”
Quest for Craft Season One launched in 2021 with episodes featuring The Godmother of Punk, singer-songwriter Patti Smith, SNL comedian Michael Che and more. The season won the 2021 Shorty Award in the Industry: Wine, Beer & Spirits and 2021 Brand Film Award in the Consumer Goods categories. In 2022, Quest for Craft Season Two highlighted conversations with GRAMMY Award-winning musician Mark Ronson, professional ballet dancer Misty Copeland, and others, which earned the show the 2023 Webby Award for Series (Branded) Video. 2023’s Season 3 featured Questlove in conversation with Yo-Yo Ma, Anderson .Paak, Fred Armisen, and Lena Waithe.
Now in its fourth season, the series continues to explore themes around craft and creativity, shining a light on the human attributes and intrinsic values that elevate something from great to exceptional. With insights and stories from some of the world’s leading creative minds, the series uncovers the nuances integral to the pursuit of craft across music, filmmaking, storytelling and the whisky-making process.
The main conversations of the series are filmed at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City (commissioned by Jimi Hendrix in 1968).
