In this video I show an easy way to reference data from a separate file in Microsoft Excel 2013. The syntax is pretty easy. I used the auto sum formula to reference a range of cells from another file. If the names do not match up exactly, Excel helps out by prompting you to browse to the location of the file with the data you want to reference.
Syntax (just change 'filename' and 'sheetname' to match what is in workbook that has the data you want):
=SUM([filename.xlsx]sheetname!b1:b5)
