Okay, trying out a new series, how to save money.
Episode 1. Telco plan.
Now my landline and wifi are covered by my republic, but what I'm sharing today is my Circle Life plan. which had helped me quite significantly, not a lot like millions or dollars. But still easily visible.
Before I got my circle life plan, I was with Starhub, I was paying i think around $60 a month for it. Now those were 2-year contract plans, meaning I could only terminate the plan after 2 years or 24 months if I do not want to incur additional early termination fees and what not. But you probably also know with those plans, you will usually be able to get new handphones from the 21st month onward with a subsidized down-payment for the phone itself, amount depending on the model of the phone you want. Some were even zero-dollar phones, meaning you make no payment upfront but get the phone. It seems like a "free phone" but if you calculate the "extra" you are paying on the contract. It is actually an installment. Currently after Circles.life and many other Telco begin to offer no-contract plans, you can definitely see why the previous term-contract plans are all installment plans. You basically were overpaying the amount that's really needed for the service, and those amounts are used to payoff the hidden installment. My current Circles life plan is just $18 a month. It gives just 25 sms, but come on no one uses sms now. 100 minutes of talk time, free incoming as per any other Telco plans, and the best part is it gives 22GB of data usage which should be more than enough for most normal usage, but what if you want more? you can simply select the option to pay an extra $20 for an additional 100GB of 4G data plus unlimited 3G data thereafter for the entire month. And yes, the base plan of just $18 includes IDD caller which in Starhub, not sure about now, but when I was still a customer there, they charge an additional $5 for it. All this means just for the base plan comparison, a $18 circles life plan is worth as much in value as the $60 a month plan. The only difference would be with the term-contract plan, the $60 one, you would be able to get installment on new phones every 2 year and have a good excuse to constantly change or upgrade your phone. How to calculate if going circles life or a no-contract plan is good for you? Now take your current Telco monthly bill amount and minus $18 from it. The new amount, for my case, $60 - $18 = $42. Meaning The extra paid every month is $42. If I take this and multiply it by the 21 months that I need to hold the plan for before renewing it, i would have been paying an additional $882 everytime I renew a plan. Now it's not a large sum, it can't make you a millionaire even if you try very hard. But this means that with the money saved, You could have easily brought yourself a new phone or two depending on what model and brand you like. For example if you were to get an economical phone, a VIVO Y30. It's great for most usage, even mobile phone gaming. And it cost just $269. This means w/o the plan, and with the money saved you could have gotten 3 of this phone over the course of 21 months and still have $75 leftover for an expensive dinner or 2 to 3 buffets or 7 to 8 MacDonald meal. And if you are like me, you don't follow the trend and don't change or upgrade your phone when there's no need to, you can probably stick to your phone for a long long time, maybe 3 to 4 years before it gets so slow and laggy you convince yourself to get the latest, economical smart phone(probably 5G phone then). So you would not be forced to upgrade or even forced to get an expensive phone and then sell it off the next few days in mint condition. I get that some people are still doing that, to get a quick buck every 21 months. But those same people are often also those who change their phones every year. Meaning that quick buck are probably burnt thought withing less than a year already.
That's all we have for you on why you should get a Circles life of any other non-contract plan, as always, I am not a financial advisor or consultant. So do your own homework and research to find the plan that best suits you and your habits!
