This digital twin tutorial covers how to specify data requirements for assets using a straight-forward, three step process in Autodesk Tandem. To get started, navigate to the MANAGE page within Autodesk Tandem then follow these 3 steps:
1. Select or create your own Classification System
2. Define the properties you want captured for a given asset type or group using Parameters
3. Define which classification system is used and where parameters are applied using Facility Templates

What is a digital twin?
A digital twin is a dynamic, up-to-date replica of a physical asset that brings together design, construction and operational data. With the addition of real-time operational data, digital twins acquire the behavioral awareness necessary to simulate, predict and inform decisions based on real-world conditions.
Why do you need a digital twin?
Digital twins provide the means to transform the built asset lifecycle. As the digital replica is enriched with operational building data, it becomes possible to predict system failures before they happen, perform “what-If” simulations, and provide rich insights into the operation, performance, and utilization of the built asset. The knowledge accumulated can be used to plan future projects and improve design decisions for better ROI.
What is Autodesk Tandem?
Autodesk Tandem is a cloud-based platform that transforms the built asset lifecycle. Autodesk Tandem helps AEC firms harness BIM (Building Information Modeling) data throughout the project lifecycle to create and handover a digital twin. Autodesk Tandem helps owners connect operational systems to the digital twin turning fragmented data into business intelligence.
Autodesk Tandem provides flexible and configurable building blocks that will enable AEC firms and owners to create and manage data-rich digital twins that mirror the built environment they represent. This allows for a more integrated workflow, whereby specifying, capturing and verifying the data—and collaboration between owners and project teams—will help achieve the desired operational outcomes.
