Rabbi Paul Yedwab in his Kabbalat Shabbat sermon at Temple Israel (West Bloomfield, Mich.) reflects on Joseph’s interpretation of dreams and the sibling jealousy that arose when Jacob's sons saw Joseph wearing the coat of many colors. "Families are tough, and sibling rivalry is real," Rabbi Yedwab explained. "Jewish history might have unfolded differently if this had not been the case."
Rabbi Yedwab shared that we are all like Joseph. We are born with a natural inclination toward narcissism, and if we're fortunate, we grow from self-centeredness to true love. "When we genuinely love another, it's because we place their interests above our own," he said.
The story of sibling rivalry reaches its climax at Sinai with the giving of the Torah, where the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves is given.
As we reflect this week on how to reconcile with estranged family members, Rabbi Yedwab also encourages us to keep our eyes on Syria during this time of potential regime change. "We may have many emotions as we watch these developments," he noted, "but perhaps this new chapter can offer a way forward, much like Joseph, who, after being cast into a pit, ultimately learned to love and embrace his brothers."
Rabbi Yedwab urges those with strained relationships to seek forgiveness and work toward moving beyond hatred.
