Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750):
MAGNIFICAT (BWV 243a)
Bach's Magnificat is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat. It is scored for five vocal parts (two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass), and a Baroque orchestra including trumpets and timpani.
Bach composed his first version of the Magnificat in 1723 for the Christmas service in Leipzig (his first Christmas there). This work is in E flat major. According to an old Leipzig Christmas custom, the Magnificat text was interpolated with 4 "lauds" (hymns in Latin and German), and Bach sets the same 4 texts (and in the same order) as his predecessor as Thomaskantor in Leipzig (Johann Kuhnau) had done.
The first laud "A" is a setting of Martin Luther's chorale "Vom Himmel hoch". It is an a cappella chorale motet in the strict stile antico. It is sung after the second movement of the Magnificat text "Et exsultavit spiritus meus".
Bach later revised his Magnificat: it was transposed to D major, the 4 lauds were removed, and various other adjustments were made. This version (BWV 243) is today the more well-known of the two.
Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her,
Ich bring euch gute neue Mär,
Der guten Mär bring ich so viel,
Davon ich sing'n und sagen will.
(Martin Luther, 1535)
From heav'n on high I come to you,
I bring to you good tidings new,
Of that good news I bring so much,
Thereof both sing and tell I will.
