Nigeria’s national grid crisis has become a recurring issue, with the grid collapsing every month this year and electricity tariffs rising sharply. The Senate Committee on Power’s report highlights inefficiencies in the power sector, estimating that $25 million (N42 billion) is required to restart the grid after each collapse. These outages are not only a significant threat to the economy but also undermine essential services, including healthcare. In this discussion, we are joined by Idowu Oyebanjo, MD of IDFON Power Engineering Consultants (IPEC), to examine the underlying causes of this issue and potential solutions, including the need for investment in infrastructure, regulatory reforms and decentralisation of power generation.
