In this video, we show you our process for hiving honeybees in April in Eagle River, Alaska. This year, we had an 80% success rate for overwintered hives. We still brought up a few more new hives for 2023, but due to cold weather they were a little later than usual. It is the end of April, and we still have massive snow piles everywhere.
There are many ways to manage hives, and we respect all variations of hiving, as we understand that different environments require different processes. The Alaska Honeybee Sanctuary does not hold any species, methods, or materials as superior or inferior. Different elements of beekeeping with thrive in different environments. This video is for educational purposes only. If you require assistance with your hive, then please reach out to us as a resource or get connected with your local bee distributor.

Want to do your part to help save the bees?
Here are a few ways you can make a Difference:
1. Make a Bee Bath - Fill a bowl or a bird bath with water and place it outside. Remember to place a large stone or two in it so that the bees can land on the stone to take a drink.
2. Plant Flowers - Local wildflower seeds and flowers can be purchased at greenhouses specific to your area. PLEASE READ YOUR FLOWER LABELS TO MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT HAVE PESTICIDES! These will kill the bees.
3. Plant Trees - Trees are a great source of food for bees when they bloom. You can find climate and regionally appropriate trees and saplings at your local nursery or greenhouse.
4. Ditch the Chemicals - Synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and other harsh outdoor chemicals can contribute to the death of an entire bee hive. Try improvising with organic methods or beneficial insects in your garden instead (such as ladybugs).
5. Support beekeepers - Local beekeepers help to conserve the bee population and increase pollination of local plants that are consumed by people and animals. Buying local honey can also significantly help with seasonal allergies!
