New Zealand will aim to be a Zero Carbon country by 2050. Its Parliament passed a law which will cut carbon emissions to zero. The aim is not to emit any greenhouse gas emissions except methane. It will also try to cut methane emissions 47% by 2050.
These goals have been set in line with the Paris Agreement which aims to keep global warming below 1.5°C. To do this, the government will plant 1 billion trees over the next 10 years.
And completely switch to renewable energy by 2035. This law also mandates setting up of a climate change commission. This commission will look at carbon budgets every five years.
