STORYLINE:
A fierce sandstorm swept into the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Saturday.
Visibility was reduced to only a few meters in some areas and most of those braving the streets wore surgical masks or protected their faces with scarfs.
Some shopkeepers in the city immediately closed their doors.
Iraq is prone to seasonal sandstorms, but experts and officials are raising alarm over their frequency in recent years, which they say is exacerbated by record-low rainfall, desertification and climate change.
