The main defining features of a raga are its ascending and descending scales, ornamentation, & the relative prominence of each note in its scale. There are special notes in each raga called vadi, samvadi, nyasa (landing or resting notes), deergha (elongated) and alpa (weak) notes.
This video illustrates the defining elements of a raga by comparing & contrasting two similar yet different ragas - Bhimpalasi and Dhani.
