Whilst being a solitary cat and one of the most secretive species in the world, it was a great surprise to see two adult male jaguars resting together on the river banks of the Cuiaba River in the Northern Pantanal. We do not know whether they are brothers or random jaguars who are tolerating each other as there is no female in heat nearby or there is more than enough food to go around. Presumably if either of these two factors were not the case then they would not have been so relaxed around each other. But with the Pantanal jaguar population only recently being subjected to sustained eco-tourism and research we are learning more and more about jaguar ecology and this may not be as unusual as previously thought? Only time will tell. You can join us in the Pantanal on our specialist jaguar watching tours of Brazil, for more information view our website (www.royle-safaris.co.uk/wildlife-holidays/brazil/) or contact us.
