SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -- Troopers say a man driving the wrong way on I-85 killed four people including himself in a six car wreck late Wednesday night.
Troopers have not identified the driver, but said they did find alcohol inside his car and are awaiting toxicology results to see if he was impaired.
Family of one of the victims, Martha Diaz, say the mother of two was driving with her boyfriend and two of her close friends on their way back from Dave and Buster's in Greenville. Only her boyfriend survived the wreck.
Diaz, 21, is a native of New York who has lived in Spartanburg with her family for the past four years. Close family friend Crystal Perez says she is still reeling from Diaz's untimely death.
"I'm still in shock, I mean it hasn't hit me. I mean it's gonna take a toll on all of us, all of us," Perez said. "I mean especially showing these two babies what life's all about without their mother is gonna be hard. Very hard."
Edwin Ferguson and Shiree Whitaker also died in Diaz's Camry, which she has just bought the day before the wreck.
Troopers say the wrong-way driver did not survive the crash. In a press release from the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office, Josh Smith, 60, was also named as one of the decedents.
A trooper was traveling northbound on I-85 between mile marker two and three when he narrowly avoided the car. A second officer tried to get the driver's attention, who had gone nearly 5 miles before crash happened.
Martha's family say they haven't had a chance to set up funeral arrangements, but most of their extended family is still in New York.
