The Wood Mouse, or Long-Tailed Field Mouse is widespread in the UK and one of the most common rodents. It frequents grassland and gardens and is almost exclusively nocturnal.
The Wood Mouse is around 20cm in length, half of which is its tail. For identification, the Wood Mouse can be distinguished from the House Mouse by its larger eyes, larger oval shaped ears and pale coloured tummy. It is also more brown in colour than a house mouse.
It does not hibernate and will stock up on nuts and berries in the autumn ready for winter when it is less active. It is prey to cats, foxes and owls and is an important food source particularly for Tawny Owls.
