Join Deb in embodying the Divine Feminine with your #InnerGoddessTeam! This week, we’re celebrating the Japanese Buddhist goddess, Benzaiten. Sometimes shortened to “Benten”, she is considered the goddess of everything that flows – water, words, speech, eloquence, and knowledge. Later on, she evolved into a goddess of wealth and good fortune.

Benzaiten is a multi-faceted goddess, known as River Goddess, Water Goddess, Bestower of Language and Letters, Goddess of Wealth and Good Fortune, Patroness of Music, Poetry, Learning and Art, Defender of Nation, and Protector of Buddhist Law.
She originally came from India to Japan as an eight-armed weapon-wielding warrior, then evolved into a two-armed beauty playing a “biwa”, a traditional Japanese lute. Eventually, the spelling of her name was changed, which added wealth and fortune to her many associations and she became one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods.
In Japanese mythology, Benten was said to have descended to earth where she met and married a dragon in order to stop him eating young children. In another story, she is a dragon woman who swam through her domain with a retinue of white snakes. In her dragon body she protected her devotees from earthquakes by mating with the monstrous snakes who thrashed under the Japanese islands. Dragons and snakes are sacred to her and she often depicted riding a dragon, surrounded by snakes.
You can call on Benzaiten when you want to create more prosperity in your life – Patricia Telesco (see below) suggests that you sprinkle salt water on your doorstep to welcome abundance into your home. Or, tapping into her eloquence and mastery of words, invoke her when you have a speech to give, or article to write… maybe sing for her and entice her with a picture of a dragon!
The chant I shared is one of my favorite water chants:
We all come from the goddess and to her we shall return,
Like a drop of rain, flowing to the ocean.
