This is one type of snake eel. The color is white with large black spots on its body like polka dots, so it is named the spotted snake eel or Ophichtus ophis. The tail of the snake eel is pointed and sharp compared to the flattened tail of the moray eel. Snake eels use their tails to burrow backwards into the sea bottom, creating protective burrows. The spotted snake eel from the southern Atlantic and Caribbean reaches a length of 120 centimeters (4 feet). The spotted snake eel is commonly found throughout the world, mostly in tropical or temperate waters. These snake-like creatures are more docile than their aggressive relatives, the morays.
