Boris Johnson has apologised for downplaying the severity of long-Covid, which he repeatedly compared to Gulf War syndrome and called “b******s”.
The former prime minister said his remarks “caused hurt and offence to huge numbers of people who do indeed suffer” from long-Covid. “And I very much regret using that language,” he added.
Mr Johnson scribbled the word “b******s” on the side of a document discussing long-Covid, and wrote “Gulf War syndrome stuff”.
Gulf War syndrome is a medical condition affecting many veterans of the 1991 Gulf War, characterised by fatigue, chronic headaches, and skin and respiratory disorders.
Mr Johnson said he merely wanted to know “where was the line”, because he wanted to avoid people “thinking” they are suffering from long-Covid but are in fact not.
