After years of planning, construction, and over $1 billion invested, the Brisbane Metro has finally launched! Join me as I take a ride on the first-ever public Metro service, a preview phase that sets the stage for the full rollout expected by late 2024. In this video, I’m joined by Councillor Ryan Murphy, Brisbane City Council's Civic Cabinet Chair for Transport, to discuss the Metro's journey, how it aims to transform public transport in Brisbane, and what the future holds for the network.
The Brisbane Metro is a fully electric, articulated vehicle system that runs on dedicated busways, offering a trackless tram experience. With two main routes in development:
Metro 1: Roma Street to Eight Mile Plains
Metro 2: Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital to UQ St Lucia
The Metro is designed to integrate with the existing bus and train networks, making commuting easier and faster. Right now, it’s operating on the 169 route from Eight Mile Plains to UQ.
In this video, we also cover the expansion plans, the decision to choose Metro over light rail, and how this system is expected to reduce congestion and improve travel times across Brisbane.
