STORYLINE:
Indian government forces fired tear gas to quell a protest by hundreds of rock-throwing Kashmiris shortly after Friday prayers in Indian-controlled Kashmir, according to police.
The protesters, carrying Pakistani flags, chanted pro-independence slogans in the region's main city, Srinagar.
Pakistan observes 5th February every year as "Kashmir Day" by holding rallies and arranging seminars on the issue of Kashmir, which is divided between Pakistan and India.
The nuclear-armed neighbours have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir after gaining independence in 1947.
UN Security Council resolution 47, adopted in 1948, calls for a vote among Kashmir residents to determine the disputed region's fate.
But the resolution was non-binding and has never been implemented.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and training Kashmir insurgents in its portion of Kashmir.
Pakistan says it only provides moral and diplomatic support.
