The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a widely acclaimed scenic railroad that draws tourists from all over the world to witness the beauty of the San Juan Mountains. Founded in 1967 as a joint effort of preservation between the states of Colorado and New Mexico, along with many volunteers, the 64 mile-long section of the Denver, Rio Grande & Western Railroad’s San Juan Extension continues to entertain with one way day-long trips through the vast mountains over Cumbres Pass and along the jaw dropping cliffs of the Toltec Gorge. Autumn is one of the best times to visit the Cumbres & Toltec, with the beautifully vibrant gold leaves of the aspen trees shimmering as they make their quick change. Often trains will be sold out, even during the week, just for people to witness the breathtaking beauty of the San Juans’ golden transition. This video features scenes both trackside and onboard scenes riding the entire line between the steep climb out of Chama, New Mexico, and the arid hills of Antonito, Colorado. Ex-D&RGW Baldwin-built K36 Class 2-8-2 “Mikado” type locomotives #484, #488, and #489 are featured in this video, along with Baldwin-built K27 Class 2-8-2 #463 making a rare appearance on the Chama side of the line.
