One of the most common questions I get as a dermatologist is, “What skincare products or skincare ingredients are safe for me to use in pregnancy?” It’s usually why I know my friends are pregnant before they’ve told anyone else 😅

One of the tricky things about skincare science is that many ingredients aren’t specifically tested on pregnant women (for ethical reasons) and thus we have to do a bit of extrapolation from the existing data to try and understand how these various products may affect a growing fetus.

Having extensively reviewed the existing data on a wide range of skincare ingredients and products (both from the perspective of a board-certified dermatologist and expectant mama), I came to some conclusions regarding what I personally feel comfortable using during pregnancy. And, when advising my pregnant patients and friends, I think sharing this can be the most helpful. It’s then ultimately up to the individual to make skincare decisions based on their own comfort level.
