In this livestream recording of Purdue University Graduation for Summer 2021 grads, Purdue recognized 474 undergraduate, 529 master’s and 13 professional degree candidates on Saturday, Aug. 7, at Elliott Hall of Music. Also present were 106 alumni who had been unable to participate in previous commencement ceremonies.
Commencement speaker Jocelyn Wong (’97) completed a chemical engineering degree at Purdue before spending more than 20 years in marketing at companies like Procter & Gamble, Safeway, Family Dollar and Lowe’s – serving as chief marketing officer at the latter two.
Wong recently stepped away from the corporate world, telling the new Purdue graduates that she is not a finished product, but instead someone who is “still trying to figure out what it is I want to be when I grow up. Much like you.” She advised the graduates that only they can determine what constitutes success in their professional and personal lives:
“You can write and rewrite your own ticket as many times and in as many different ways as you want,” Wong said. “You will grow through your failures, and you will flourish. Remember to look in the mirror and challenge yourself to really see who you are, and who you’re becoming. Then walk through the doors that present themselves to you, and take the risk even if you don’t always know what’s on the other side. If you know your truth, you’ll never get lost.”
