In my previous video clip, we visited a middle spotted woodpecker family and talked about how to tell the different species of woodpeckers apart. This June I also managed to come across the lesser spotted woodpeckers, so now you can easily compare the two species. However, as I mentioned in the previous text - you won't confuse a lesser spotted woodpecker with any other species because it is only as big as a sparrow.
Lesser spotted woodpeckers often carve their little cavities in dead trees because their beaks are not strong enough to peck their way into e.g. a healthy beech tree. So again, they are a bird species that needs well-preserved stands of old wood to live in.
This time I managed to spot them in a decaying apple tree in the middle of an orchard. The cavity was hidden high in the canopy, and if the youngsters hadn't been loudly begging for food, I would never have noticed them. Unlike the middle spotted woodpeckers in the previous video, however, these parents were quite introverted and didn't particularly enjoy my visit. So I just took a few shots as a souvenir and disappeared again within a few minutes to give the birds some peace and quiet.
