Kolkata Building Fire: Nine emergency responders have died in a fire that broke out at a multi-storey building in Kolkata on Monday evening. West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose confirmed that four firefighters, two RPF jawans and one Kolkata police ASI have died in the blaze.
The New Koilaghat building on Kolkata's Strand Road, where the fire broke out on Monday, houses offices of the Railways. Kolkata Commissioner of Police Soumen Mitra, Fire Minister Sujit Bose and Joint CP (crime) Murlidhar were among the senior officials seen monitoring rescue operations on the spot.
"We are facing a little issue as there is less space, making it difficult to put our ladders in place. We are working," minister Sujit Bose had told reporters earlier.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached the spot on Monday night to oversee rescue efforts.
"It is very sad. Ex gratia of Rs 10 lakhs each will be given to the kin of the deceased and a government job will be given to one family member," CM Banerjee was heard telling media personnel.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the kin of the deceased and tweeted Tuesday morning, "Saddened by the loss of lives due to the fire tragedy in Kolkata. In this hour of sadness, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest."
