Giles Cooke MW, Winemaker explains that This Charming Man Single Vineyard Grenache is from the most Northern area of McLaren Vale, Clarendon. The soil composition of this special, Smart Vineyard, is clay loam, ironstone and some quartz, very different to the Maslin Sands of Blewitt Springs. Ironstone gives the wine a ferrous, mineral character. Despite the wine's prettyness there is a real core of tannin in a similar way to Nebbiolo, so the wine is not dissimilar to the wines of Barolo.
A remarkable site that has vines of 100 years old. The entire site is dry grown, old bush vines and has been farmed by the same family for 3 generations.
Described as 'Among Australia's very greatest reds.' by Halliday Wine Companion the wine is an homage to grower and charming man, Bernard Smart.
