Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #4: Basic Phrase Fully Syncopated
in:
Só Danço Samba (Antonio Carlos Jobim - Vinícius de Moraes)
as played by João Gilberto on album Getz/Gilberto from 1963.
This lesson is subtitled.
This song was launched in Au Bon Gourmet show, performed in Rio de Janeiro in 1962 by Jobim, Gilberto, Vinícius, Os Cariocas, Otavio Bailly and Milton Banana, together with other bossa nova classics Garota de Ipanema, Samba do Avião, Samba da Benção and O Astronauta. It was recorded by Jobim/Gilberto in the next year on album Getz/Gilberto with very similar guitar accompaniment.
This song includes many basic bossa nova phrases and their variations. Few notes about playing:
1. In a syncopated phrase the chord change usually occur on the last weak beat of the phrase and only the bass is played on the following strong beat. However in some instances both bass and chord are played on that following beat.
2. Pay special attention to musical articulation. Most of the phrases are played with a combination of staccato and legato. This is normally indicated in subtitles.
3. There is one chord replacement, at 1:21 and 1:33 A7/6 replaced Em9 that João Gilberto played originally.
Enjoy playing Só Danço Samba!
