▶️ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov in Kyiv, Ukraine, April 28, 2022.
👉Zelenskyy's office said in a statement published Thursday that Petkov's visit is an important sign of solidarity with Ukraine and its people.
Bulgaria, under a new liberal government that took office last autumn, has cut many of its old ties to Moscow and likewise supported punitive measures against the Kremlin.
It has also hosted Western fighter jets at a new NATO outpost on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast.
Earlier in the day, Petkov said during a visit to the Ukrainian town of Borodyanka that he hopes Bulgarian lawmakers will agree next week to send military assistance to Ukraine.
The visit by the Bulgarian leader comes a day after Russia suddenly cut off natural gas to his country and fellow NATO member Poland, in what is seen as a bid to punish and divide the West over its support for Ukraine ahead of the potentially pivotal battle in the eastern industrial region of the Donbas.
