If you like to sew clothes but do not have a serger, this is a good alternative to finish the raw edges of the fabric. Look for the overcast stitch on your sewing machine (it looks like a combination of the straight stitch on the left and a zigzag stitch on the right). Use an overcast foot to keep the fabric stable and to prevent it from being swallowed into the machine.
