Bowie Knife and KABAR, It's Not a 'Blood Groove'.
The channel or gutter running along a knife blade is often referred to a blood grove, but knife terminology is incorrect. What is often referred as a 'blood groove' on a knife or sword is actually a 'fuller'. The purpose of the 'fuller' is to lighten the knife or sword to improve the balance of the knife or sword without sacrificing much knife or sword strength. Even the Marine Corps definition of the knife fuller will state that it's a 'blood groove' The Marine Corps defines the term 'blood groove' as 'A groove in a fighting knife or sword to allow for blood to flow from a wound so that the blade can be removed easier (a significant concern in close combat).' So you can see how far widespread the misinformation on the knife fuller is widespread.
