STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday reiterated its commitment to offering foreign businesses “open, inclusive, transparent, and non-discriminatory” environment as it considers plan to launch an anti-dumping probe into three European cognac brands.
The Chinese Commerce Ministry said on Tuesday that they planned to select Martell & Co, Societe Jas Hennessy & Co, and E. Remy Martin & Co as sample companies for the investigation into brandy imported from the European Union.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters at a daily briefing that he was not aware of the situation but reaffirmed the country’s adherence to “a high level of openness” and “principles of the market economy and WTO rules.”
Wang dismissed a question about whether this was a response to the EU’s anti-dumping probe into Chinese electric vehicles.
Wang also said China-Australia relations have seen “momentum of improvement” when asked about a potential removal of Chinese tariffs on Australian wine.
He did not give a timetable for the decision but said China would continue to “seek common ground while shelving differences and strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Australia.”
Separately, Wang expressed opposition to Taiwan's vice president-elect Hsiao Bi-khim’s visit to the U.S. this week, saying the country was “closely following the situation.”
Beijing is against any official exchanges between Taiwan's government and other foreign governments because it claims Taiwan is part of its national territory and not an independent country.
