Germany has bought dozens of Leopard tanks that were gathering dust in a Belgian warehouse to send them to Ukraine, according to reports.
The 50 Leopard 1 tanks had been sold off as obsolete by the Belgian military to private arms dealers in the country more than five years ago.
The majority of them will be overhauled by defence giant Rheinmetall and shipped to Ukraine as part of a German military package, while others will be dismantled for spare parts.
Berlin promised to fund the restoration of 32 Leopard 1s, the predecessor to the modern Leopard 2, as part of a €700 million (£603m) aid pledge to Kyiv made at the Nato summit in Vilnius last month.
