Being a project manager is challenging. It requires a lot of personal responsibility, especially when things get tough.
One of the most difficult things you’ll have to do as a DPM is deliver news that your client or team doesn’t like.
When the time comes to share bad news, it can be helpful to remember that, as a leader, it’s your responsibility to manage the project and deliver news—both good and bad.
It can also be helpful to remember that you are running a business, not dealing with family members. Your clients are paying your for your services, and are holding you accountable.
Sometimes this might mean adapting your procedures to accommodate the situation. It might mean implementing a higher level of accountability for everyone involved, or finding a creative solution to the problem.
Lastly, you need to be willing to own up to the situation when things aren’t going well.
Being a project manager can be tough. There is a lot of responsibility, and the expectations of you are high. Handling these situations like a professional is easier when you remember that’s why your client hired you and trusts you. They have confidence in your ability to get the job done.
